Campervan Insulation: How to Build a Warm, Quiet and Cozy Van

Insulation is the layer nobody sees and everybody feels. It decides how warm the van stays in winter, how comfortable it is in summer, how quiet it feels on the road and how much you enjoy living inside.

It is also one of the few parts of a build that cannot be easily changed later. Once the walls and floor are closed, improving the insulation usually means taking the camper apart.

This page is an overview of insulation materials and our approach to building a comfortable campervan. The right solution depends on the vehicle, the climate you travel in and how you use the van.

Why This Layer Decides Everything Else

A van loses heat through the metal body, glass areas and the frame itself, which can transfer cold directly through the structure. These are thermal bridges, and they are often where the biggest heat losses happen.

Warm air meeting cold metal creates condensation. In a poorly insulated van, moisture can collect behind the panels, where it stays hidden until problems such as rust or unpleasant smells appear.

Good insulation is not only about keeping the van warm. It is about controlling temperature differences and managing moisture inside the structure.

Materials, and What They Actually Do

These are the materials you will find in almost every discussion about campervan insulation. Each one behaves differently in a vehicle compared with a house.

Mineral wool

The cheapest option, and not one we normally recommend for campervans.

Mineral wool can absorb moisture, while a van naturally creates humidity every night from breathing, cooking and daily use. Once wet, it loses insulating performance, can settle over time and may stay damp inside a closed wall.

It works well in houses because they are designed with larger structures, ventilation and moisture management in mind. A campervan has very different conditions.

ArmaFlex

One of the most popular insulation choices for modern campervan builds.

It is a closed-cell material, meaning it does not absorb water and can be glued directly to the metal body without leaving an air gap behind. This helps reduce cold surfaces where condensation can form.

It costs more per square metre and requires careful installation, which is why cheaper builds often use simpler alternatives.

Synthetic wool

A polyester-based insulation material that does not retain moisture in the same way as mineral wool.

It is lightweight, easy to install and useful for filling cavities and irregular spaces where rigid materials cannot reach.

It also provides good sound absorption, which is why it is often combined with other insulation materials rather than used as the only layer.

Vibration Damping and Soundproofing

Insulation and noise control are two different jobs, and they require different solutions.

The first layer is vibration damping, applied to the large flat panels of the body. Sheet metal can resonate like a drum, and damping materials reduce that vibration. The second layer absorbs airborne noise coming from the road, engine and surroundings.

We treat the cab separately: floor, wheel arches and doors. It is one of the least visible parts of a build, but often one of the most noticeable in everyday use because it changes what the van feels like to drive for hours.

Insulation and Heating Go Together

Insulation and heating are two parts of the same system. Good insulation keeps the heat inside, while the heating system replaces the heat that is lost.

A powerful heater cannot compensate for poor insulation. The van will use more energy, create more condensation and still feel cold near the walls.

Common Questions About Campervan Insulation

What is the best insulation for a campervan?+

There is no single material that works everywhere. For most campervans, we achieve the best results by combining different materials.

We typically use closed-cell insulation such as ArmaFlex directly on the metal body, with synthetic wool filling cavities where needed. Just as important as the materials is the installation itself: eliminating air gaps, reducing thermal bridges and preventing moisture from becoming trapped.

Why do you not recommend mineral wool?+

Because a campervan is very different from a house.

Every night, breathing, cooking and everyday living create moisture inside the van. Mineral wool can absorb that moisture, reducing its insulation performance and allowing dampness to remain inside the walls.

It works well in buildings designed for it. In campervans, we believe there are better solutions.

Does insulation help in summer?+

Absolutely.

Good insulation slows heat entering the van just as it slows heat escaping in winter. That means the interior stays comfortable for longer, even when the van is parked in direct sunlight.

Do I need soundproofing if I already have insulation?+

Yes, because they do different jobs.

Insulation helps control temperature and condensation. Vibration damping reduces resonance in the body panels. Sound-absorbing materials reduce road and engine noise.

Together they create a campervan that is both quieter and more comfortable to travel in.

Can insulation be added to a campervan later?+

Usually only by taking much of the interior apart.

Because insulation sits behind the wall panels, upgrading it later often means removing furniture, panelling and sometimes parts of the electrical system.

That is why insulation is one of the best investments to make at the beginning of a build.

Do I need to insulate the floor and the ceiling as well?+

Yes. Heat is lost through every part of the van: floor, roof, walls, doors and wheel arches all play a role.

Skipping one area creates cold spots, reduces the overall efficiency of the build and increases condensation in exactly the places you cannot see.

Is ArmaFlex enough on its own?+

Not always.

Every campervan is different. In many builds, ArmaFlex forms the main insulation layer, while other materials are added where they perform better, such as inside cavities or areas that need additional sound absorption.

The best results come from combining the right materials, not from relying on a single product.
